Supervisor Therapist - Psychologist

Wandiyali will be providing the Evidence Based Model, Multi-systemic Therapy - Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) program as part of a suite of evidence based programs being rolled out to vulnerable children and families in NSW. Wandiyali currently provides a number of services to the Indigenous communities of Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Hunter area.

Multi-systemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) is an evidenced based program designed to treat 6-17 year-olds and their families who have come to the attention of child protective services due to physical abuse and/ or neglect. MST-CAN works with the family ecology and is effective in improving family connections, ensuring the safety of children and young people, preventing abuse and neglect, reducing mental health issues experienced by adults and children and increasing natural social supports to reduce the risk of children and young people entering the out-of-home care system.


The Role

You'll be part of a professional team that is amongst the first in NSW to successfully deliver MST-CAN. As the Supervisor, you will lead a team to deliver both therapeutic and practical interventions with complex and vulnerable families, where their children are at risk of entering the Out of Home Care System.

You will be responsible for;

  • Effective and efficient management of the team, which includes 3 x Therapists, a Caseworker and a Psychiatrist (One day a week)
  • Ensuring adherence to the MST-CAN treatment model
  • Overseeing and providing high level clinical guidance for complex cases
  • Liaising with relevant stakeholders to maintain a consistent flow of referrals.
  • Providing on-call support

Required Qualifications, skills and experience

  • Master’s Degree in clinical or counselling Psychology, Social Work or a related subject area with significant experience in therapeutic settings
  • Experience in the child and family welfare sector, including Child Protection or Out of Home Care or Family Services.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and experience working with Aboriginal families
  • Experience working with complex and vulnerable families that are affected by domestic violence, mental health, substance use and trauma.
  • Highly developed skills supervising and leading clinical teams including delivering group supervision
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with relevant government and non-government professionals, community groups, services and agencies
  • Current NSW driver's licence


Desirable Criteria

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience delivering family therapy; cognitive behaviour therapy; behaviour therapy; trauma treatment.
  • Implementation of interventions within or between systems in the family's natural ecology that affect or contribute to the child abuse and/or neglect (i.e., individual child, family, peer, school, and community)


Preferred Knowledge:

  • Family systems theory and application
  • Social ecological theory and application
  • Family Problem Solving and Communication
  • Child development research and its application in treatment
  • Research on factors that contribute to child physical abuse and neglect
