Wandiyali will be providing the Evidence Based Model, Multi-systemic Therapy - Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) program as part of a suite of evidence based programs being rolled out to vulnerable children and families in NSW. Wandiyali currently provides a number of services to the Indigenous communities of Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Hunter area.

Multi-systemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) is an evidenced based program designed to treat 6-17 year-olds and their families who have come to the attention of child protective services due to physical abuse and/ or neglect. MST-CAN works with the family ecology and is effective in improving family connections, ensuring the safety of children and young people, preventing abuse and neglect, reducing mental health issues experienced by adults and children and increasing natural social supports to reduce the risk of children and young people entering the out-of-home care system.

The Role

You'll be part of a professional team that will be amongst the first in NSW to deliver MST-CAN. As the teams case worker you will liaise with the team therapists as well as relevant stakeholders, work with families within their home or locations convenient to them, participate in continuing individual and group supervision to assure adherence to MST principles and MST process, ability to potentially participate in a rotating 24/7 roster.

In this role you will be supported by Wandiyali, the program developers and both international and local intermediary services to ensure you are set up for success and are achieving the outcomes demonstrated through the delivery of this program.

The successful applicant will be able to effectively address the following criteria;

Education Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in Psychology, Social Work, Childhood Education or a related subject area. 

Preferred Experience:

Work with families in a community based setting
Work with child protection and court systems
Ability to work as a team member
Management of suicidal or homicidal threats and family safety risks
Behavioural therapy targeting behavioural change in children at home and school
Implementation of interventions within or between systems in the youth’s natural ecology that affect or influence the behaviour of youth (i.e., family, peer, school, and neighbourhood)

 

Preferred Knowledge:

Behavioural therapies theory and application
Child development
Parenting skills
A working understanding of the culture and strengths of the families within the MST-CAN population
Resources available in the community and the ability to connect families to those resources
Job attainment skills
Budgeting skills
Ability to locate and access housing for clients
Ability to work with families to develop a safety plan

In this position you will be a member of a team consisting of;

3 x MST-CAN Therapist
1 x MST-CAN Crisis Caseworker
And a Psychiatrist (One day a week)
